Chapter 30

With a hoarse voice, Mac finished off another day of shooting. The sun had set and the night was balmy. The set designers went to work, preparing for the next day. They’d probably be working to midnight. At least he didn’t have to hang around like they did.

Going home wasn’t all that appealing either. What he didn’t want right now was to spend time in his head, mulling over the last week and its events. Thinking about it did no good, rehashing the same old scenes over and over again.

No, tonight he would drink and be merry. Whether at the bar closest to his house or some other, he didn’t know yet. He didn’t have a particular preference.

Walking toward the large doors of the studio building, he saw the trim form of Mavis, or Anita as they had been told to refer to her publicly. The name suited her, and she apparently wanted to be called that by all. It wasn’t hard to understand why they would get rid of Mavis, which sounded like a fishmonger’s wife. The girl was too pretty to be Mavis. He wasn’t sure Anita was right either, but it would probably grow on her.

“Evening, Mr. Darren,” she said, her voice high and crisp like a little bell. The work she’d been doing on elocution was certainly paying off.

“Please call me Mac.”

“Alright, Mac. It was a pleasure to watch you work today. I learn so much by just observation.”

She was a bright, young thing, ambition stamped into her very bones. “Glad it was helpful.”

Pulling out his cigarette pack, he put one in his mouth and lit it, drawing the calming smoke into his lungs. “Care for one?”

“Don’t mind if I do,” she said and he flicked the packet until one popped forward. She leaned close as he lit it for her. Elegant fingers gripped the cigarette. “I missed the bus,” she said and blew out smoke. “I have to wait an hour for the next one.”

“Tough break,” he chuckled.

“Can’t afford a car yet.”

“Do you know how to drive?”

“Oh yes, you don’t grow up where I did without knowing how to drive,” she said.

“Which was where exactly?”

“Vermont. Yourself?”

“Milwaukee.”

“Lake country.”

“It’s not all lakes, but they are beautiful.”

“I love lakes,” she said with a wistful look. “So peaceful.”

“Perhaps you should visit sometime.”

“Maybe I should. Where are you heading?” she asked, looking down the street toward the parking lot.

“To get drunk,” he admitted.

Mavis looked at him and smiled. “Have we taken you to the end of your tolerance?”

“And then some.” Although it was his personal life that was more stressful than the long days and tight shooting schedule.

“Care to buy me a drink?” It was a forward question, but he didn’t mind. Their Mavis wasn’t a shrinking violet, it seemed.

“Sure, if you wish to tag along.”

“I’m doing nothing but waiting anyway. The studio is actually quite a creepy place after dark.”

“Hadn’t noticed.”

“I think you have to be a woman to notice such things.” Her eyes sparkled in the dark.

“Where
